There’s just something about an Island September…..

~

Well, the sun’s not so hot in the sky today
and you know I can see summertime slipping on away.
A few more geese are gone, a few more leaves turning red,
but the grass is as soft as a feather in a featherbed.
September Grass ~ James Taylor

There’s been a change in the light, the air, the smell of the ocean, the way the days start and how they end. Summer is coming to an end here on our little island. We are approaching the beautiful,  vibrant days of autumn! A time for wool socks and cozy pullovers, evening fires and chopping wood.  The trails are carpeted with leaves that speak to you and have so much to say. Come and hear their stories!

“After all,” Anne had said to Marilla once, “I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”
― L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Avonlea

PEI Lobster Season starts May 1st!!!!

Lobster season on PEI typically begins on May 1st (dependent on ice conditions). This time of year it is not unusual to spot lobster boats being hauled down our roads to the local wharf and trucks loaded with lobster traps making their way to the harbour to be readied for ‘setting day’. A very exciting and busy time of year here on PEI!! If you love lobsters you will be looking forward to a feed of lobsters arriving at your door that you can prepare for that first taste of the season. Put the pot on… melt some butter (and garlic if you like) and prepare for a feast!

The beginnings of a beautiful day on the water….

Some information from the TourismPEI: There are two lobster seasons….

Located in the eastern end of PEI. Home to many lobster boats during the season.

From Chef Michael Smith: Lobsters are one of the tastiest and most festive ingredients from Prince Edward Island. A feed of lobsters is an instant occasion, a special treat and a tasty connection to the island. Read on

And a link to some of Chef Michael’s great lobster recipes.

Baffled by how to actually eat a lobster in the shell? Directions from a local fishermen here:

Some fishermen store there traps and equipment in their fishing shacks.

PEI lobster has earned a reputation among the finest in the world, and our fishery is a tradition that dates back generations. From the Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association.

Youtube is home to many videos that take you out on the water for a typical day of lobster fishing.

I’m Lester the Lobster from PEI
An ugly little bug with beady little eyes
I can tackle anything up to twice my size
I’m Lester the Lobster from PEI

Now some people hold to the silly little notion
That every single lobster in the big wide ocean
Is as green as can be until they’re boiled
But I’m as red as Prince Edward Island soil

An Amazin’ crustacean that’s what I am it’s plain
The first little lobster to bring the island fame
I was hatched on the shores in the PEI mud
And the colour of the Island soil has gotten in my blood

Well I’m grown up now and looking for a mate
A quaint and dainty lobster miss who would co-habitate
With a great red lobster from the shores of PEI
But my little lobster miss would have to be as red as I

Well I’d like to send a message to the people of the world
If anyone should come across a little lobster girl
Who’s as red as Prince Edward Island, sittin’ in the sea
Just crate her up and ship her here, and send her C.O.D.

Enjoy your first feed of the PEI season!! It is always the tastiest!!

Remembrance Day – Lest we Forget….

Remembrance Day 15

A little glimpse of our gorgeous day that we had on PEI on Wednesday October 14th, 2015. Beautiful and sunny – +20C (and felt warmer) – the dogs loved it and the sunset was amazing! The autumn this year has been so nice to us… Like Ann (with an E) said: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” ― L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables.

Prince Edward Island – the best time to visit can be in the fall! Book your trip now to come view properties or just give it a feel. There is still loads of colour to be found on the trees and beautiful sunsets to warm your face!

Fall is apple picking time!

This is my Island – Prince Edward Island

Eastern Graphic filmed this lovely little video in 1974. A great glimpse of the Island in the mid 70’s. Well worth the 20 minutes to view. I was born in 1960 and the song and images bring back such great memories of growing up on the Cradle on the Waves! Heck! My husband, Brad Oliver – owner/operator of Brad Oliver Realty can even be seen in the video. Can you spot him at 9:05 sitting in the boat! The kids thought it was great to see!

A great little invitation to come play on our Island by Dr. Stompin’ Tom Connors! Most Islanders can still sing this song from start to finish! Go ahead and ask them! 8005657421.com still takes you to our very informative PEI Tourism website! Keep the youtube video playing for more entertaining songs from our Stompin’ Tom!! Enjoy!!

She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

A little Island tradition still being carried on in some parts to this day –

Moonshine Runs Through the Veins of Prince Edward Island

I grew up in Prince Edward Island with a guy named Merle.* A few years prior to his wedding, Merle, a seventh-generation islander, got drunk on shine and ended up chasing his future wife around the house with a shotgun.

Shine can do that to a person, though………
